Glossary of Acronyms, Digital & Photographic Terms

Introduction

The pace of change in digital photography gets faster by the day. This guide was first published in 1999 in Maxwell’s former Light Reading magazine. That’s almost the entire lifetime of digital capture ago!

This new Maxwell listing is amongst the most complete and comprehensive anywhere on the web, since it covers digital, computer and photography terms in the one place. There’s also a healthy coverage of acronyms.

It attempts to make sense of the ever-growing list of terminology and ‘technospeak’, taking you through the terms that you'll find used with increasing frequency in the world of digital imaging! The list has been completely re-written for 2007.

The Shorter Oxford English Dictionary defines glossary as "a list with explanations of abstruse … or technical terms." It also states that such a list can be of antiquated terms. Compiling a list of technical terms used in digital imaging is likely to meet both criteria. No sooner will you have read this but new words and terms will have been invented. If your work requires you to compile web pages or you are just starting to explore your own digital darkroom, there should be something here for you. Hopefully it will also help you to also ask the right questions when buying or comparing equipment.
